Are ATV tire chains worth it? ›

Chains provide extra grip during the icy months. All-season tires may not create enough friction in deep snow and on ice. For the best fit, you should purchase chains that correspond to the number on the sidewall of your ATV tires.

On a four wheel drive vehicle they are generally fitted to the front wheels (please check manufacturers handbook for advice, many are 'fit to rear'), if there is limited clearance at the front you will either have to buy a more expensive chain for the front or they will need to be fitted to the rear wheels.

The chain packaging will state which tires it fits, and don't be afraid to ask for advice in the shop. Never attempt to use chains that are too large or too small, as this could result in dangerous driving and damage to your car. Install your chains & test them on a snowy or slippery road before you really need them.

If I have 4-wheel-drive, do I need to carry chains? Yes. Even though weather conditions may not warrant the use of chains on 4-wheel-drive vehicles at a particular time, to enter a chain control area, you must have a set of chains (for one drive axle) for your vehicle in your possession.

Another, much easier way to check for a worn chain is to try to pull the chain away from the rear of the sprocket on the rear wheel. If the chain is worn, you'll reveal about half a tooth of the sprocket. A new chain will wrap around the sprocket snugly and won't pull away.
